Listed by IP Profiles 2007 as a “Prominent Practitioner” in IP Law

Prior to joining Tan Peng Chin LLC in March 2006, Gene pupilled and thereafter worked as an associate at the Singapore offices of international law firm Baker & McKenzie.

Gene’s practice is focused on intellectual property law. He has represented a wide spectrum of clients in industries such as computer software, entertainment, media, film and music, sports, apparel, pharmaceutical, healthcare, consumer goods, cosmetics and hospitality, in a variety of contentious and non-contentious intellectual property work. Gene oversees the trade mark practice in the firm, and he works closely with director Mark Lim.

Gene has co-authored several articles on tort law and intellectual property law which have been published in both local and international journals, including the European Intellectual Property Review. He also co-authored the Singapore chapter in Famous and Well-known Marks - An International Analysis by Frederick Mostert. Gene was the research assistant for the tort law chapter in the inaugural edition of Halsbury’s Laws of Singapore and he continues to contribute annually to the review of Singapore cases for tort law undertaken by the Singapore Academy of Law.

Gene is also registered as a consultant with the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) under the SCOPE IP programme, an initiative by IPOS providing local businesses with strategies for creation, ownership, protection and exploitation of intellectual property.

Outside his legal practice, Gene is an avid biker and aspiring musician. To him, there are few things quite as liberating as taking to the road for a long ride on his beloved Harley-Davidson with “nothing but the sunshine on your back, the wind upon your face, and the open road ahead”. Gene’s other passion, apart from his sweetheart, Esther, is his guitar. He has performed at various in-house events but unfortunately he has yet to find his big break.
